With the large amount of movement on the log over the 2nd double header weekend, a loss to the Big Green Machine, A’s and VOB grabbing 4 points, Bellville face the young Durbanville, critical points to be grabbed by the bottom of the table teams, it certainly adds to another exciting weekend of ball.
Lets start with what we think is the Pic of the week. The onfire Athlone A’s and the never say die Yankees in Mitchells plain. A mouth watering event just off the bat. Athlone, while struggling, managed to hand Yankees a 4-2 defeat on the 29th Oct at home, but playing at Yankee’s fortress is going to be a whole lot different. A’s now have a bullpen that some unions can only dream to have and batters are starting to find form scoring runs. Yankees however have the evergreen maestro in the southpaw Luwayne, who has shown over and over again that he can tie up any team. On paper one must look at A’s taking this one, but there is more to it than paper. Both teams sitting with 5 wins, scored 48 runs to 55, given up 42 and 44 runs. So lets be bold A’s will take this one UNLESS that Yankee Lefty makes life a misery for them. This should be a pitchers duel for sure.
Then the next big game would VOB vs Van der Stel at Van der Stel. There was only 1 run between them in their last outing at VOB, but once more, this is going to be different out in Stellenbosch. However, VOB are on a 6 game winning steak and VdS having given up some big totals in the last two weekends. VdS will definitely fancy their chances and hope that their bullpen can keep the VOB hitters at bay. The VOB Bullpen is deep, very deep.and they can keep pressure on any lineup. The real question in this game is this. VOB have come from behind in 5 of their 6 wins, they have won on a single big innings rally, so they will be confident no matter what the score is, but that is not a good strategy against teams that will not let them in. The big teams will not make 2 or 3 errors in one innings OR have a significant change in the pitching from starter to reliever. For VOB to make claims on playoffs at the end of the season, they are going to have to score early in the game and get hits all game long. Having said that, the VOB youngsters are in good form being ably lead by PB, even if from the bench. VOB should take this game with ease, but it will be close for a while.
This weekend is going to a good test to see the resilience and power of the green machine. Bothasig 1st play giants at giants… always a challenge. Giants wool be looking to prove a point this weekend. The 1st 5 innings of this outing is going to be nothing short of Epic. It is unlikely that Giants will throw the local pitchers for development in this game, but rather hope to snag 2 points from the Sig like they did last year. We have mentioned this name many times Jaz, he is tough and burns through lineups. The Green Machine should take this game with ease, as they have it all. It is unlikely that they will make the errors that they made last weekend, but that was likely due to the cauldron pressure of Bellville. So, I think this is going to be a tough day for Giants, even though playing at home, as Bothasig will want to assert their dominance back in the league as soon as is possible. The 1st 5 innings, this is the place to be for sure, this weekend. Bothasig to take this as they break free later in the game.
Helderberg face Crusaders at Grassypark. Grassypark are on a 5 game losing streak and will want to break that for sure, GPC started off hot, but some injuries, some sore arms and some bad bounces have seen them come short. They are a young side that has terrific potential with the likes of Chad Beukes at 3rd base, who has speed 2nd to none. Pirates have become the “bad boys” well lets call them the Pirates in the league, they forfeited a game last weekend and then pushed VOB on Sunday with Kieran Clackett throwing all 9 and going up real high in the pitch count. But once more, this team is older than the GPC, and not as hungry, BUT they have some real play makers. Darryn Charmers is still smashing the ball and the likes of SP catching or at SS will make your life tough. Stats will say that GP should take this, but……
Bellville face Durbanville this weekend and even if Bellville rest up some of their older more experienced players, they will still be in the mix and on the bench to encourage. This is going to be a long hard day at the office for Durbanville, This is a game that Durbanville coaches and players must take out their notebooks and learn, they are likely going to get beaten by a big score, so learn what one can do and cannot do in the ML.
